  • Colofac tablets contain the active ingredient mebeverine hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called an antispasmodic.

Mebeverine works by acting directly on the smooth muscle in the gut, causing it to relax. This relieves painful muscle spasms of the gut, without affecting the normal movement of food.

Mebeverine is used to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and related intestinal disorders that are the result of spasms in the intestinal muscles. These include colicky abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhoea alternating with constipation and flatulence (wind).

Mebeverine should be taken three times a day, preferably 20 minutes before meals, as this will help relieve symptoms that are worse after eating.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Do NOT chew, crush or break them.

Do not take more than 3 tablets a day.

When the symptoms have improved, usually after several weeks, the dose can be gradually reduced.

Side effects with mebeverine are rare. Some people have reported allergic reactions such as rashes, hives, or severe swelling of lips, face or tongue (angioedema).

These side effects may not include all of the side effects reported by the medicine's manufacturer.

For more information about any other possible risks associated with mebeverine, please read the information provided with the medicine or consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Mebeverine should be used with caution in:

    • Hereditary blood disorders called porphyrias.

Mebeverine should NOT be used in children under 10.
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using mebeverine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
